Have any of you done celebrity gifting? Have you had it work well? Do you pay someone to send it in a celebrity gift basket or do you just send it in yourself?
I've spent a decent amount on advertising over the past decade and have literally NEVER had it pay off with the exception of possibly sending in stuff to blogs, but then it's usually only one or two orders from the blog write up.
I'm stumped at how to keep my business growing. After a decade it's doing well, but seems to be "stagnant". Just trying to stir up the waters a bit. |

We should brainstorm. I am basically jaded against spending $$$ on advertising because I've never had it work. But I don't mind sending free jewelry! LOL That's a bit backwards. Oh well...
I went gung ho on blogs awhile back but didn't see much of a result in increased sales, so I tapered off since it was so much work with such little return.
I just got a note in my inbox asking about celebrity gifting (with a hefty price tag of course) and wasn't sure if I should just send samples straight to the celebrity myself. Who would I send it to? Maybe their publicist? |

| We donate things to various charities and not for profits. This usually gives us many orders and loyal customers. We have a monthly drawing and we're running a special contest. If you do a search on the net you can usually find things that work. |

| You can send things to their publicist but I have to wonder how much actually gets to these busy people. Maybe the thing to do is to ask on other sites who has gifted and what happened to the gifts. I hate sending free things to people thta can well afford the things and may not appreciate the gift, but I have no problems gifting to those in need. |

How cool would it be though to see a celebrity wearing your product and the amount of business that could bring in. |

| I completely understanding not wanting to send a free gift to someone that can afford it (it kind of irks me, too). However, I have to look at it as advertising, not sending out a free gift. I donate to pretty much every legitimate charitable organization/school/foundation that asks for a donation for auctions and such, but honestly there are no advertising or tax benefits that I've seen on my end...so that's not why I do it. However, sending to a celebrity would definitely be strictly in hopes of being advertising for my business. |

Girls... I would rethink this a bit... Do you ever watch the celebs or read about them when they get baskets or goodies from Companies... The celeb rarely pays attention and hands it out to friends and staff... The celebs get SO MUCH stuff all the time... especially jewelry that they just give it out. Not to rain on your idea, but in all honesty... It is a crap shoot... Even if a celeb likes what you gifted, chances are they won't remember where it came from other then "it was in a swag, or it was a gift" Heck even Tori Spelling was tired of all the gifts and told her friends and others to take what ever they wanted... (Just an example of what I actually saw related to this content on OXYGEN) I have sold to a good friend of Meredith Vierra's when she left "The View"... so Meredith owns one of my pieces. Almost sold a piece to Rosi O'Donnell once and Luiz Gonzalas former PRO Baseball player (At the time he had just won the World Series as a Diamondback) purchased from me... It was all exciting while it was happening but more for me then anyone else. Not one of them has referred anyone to me... So I guess I am thankful for all my repeat NON-CELEB customers that are honestly keeping me going while our times are tough. Maybe you guys should look into your clientele and offer incentives.
Vanessa... you had a fun thing going on with your different sales and asked others to join with a give away for publicity... That was a GREAT idea... Tap into your past and make it be your present. After-all.... your past is your BEST advertisement and are a walking billboard and reward them...
Something else I did early on... Go to your Baby Stores... and outfit a salesperson or 2 with your work... Tell them they can keep it or earn it, but have to spread the word and to hand our your business cards ... YOU might be surprised how thankful an employee can be and what kind of work they do for you... Heck! It can be the Children's Dept. at any store... I did the Baby Stores... USA Baby and BabysRUs ... Worked well ... Might even do it again...
Seriously... Your money can be spent better in other ways for GOOD exposure and with little investment... Just thought I would share...
I wish you continued success... :)

But is it advertising? I have to agree with Becci.
I've never seen a celebrity say I got this from so and so unless it was a friend of theirs hawking a new line of something.
I really find that donating to charity auctions and various events where free prizes are given out are a great way of advertising your business. At least 50% of our customers come from the donations we've made.
And they are appreciative of any item you donate. You are usually listed in their thank-you advertisements and if the item is auctioned off you get all that free publicity. Donate to your local PBS station when they have their annual drive. If your local hospice has a shop that sells items donate to them. Same with hospitals. If your store sells supplies for a specific craft and you're versed in creating the craft make something and donate it. Writing articles about creating crafts is also a good way to get free publicity. I'm sure others will think of more things. |

I think it all depends on what you sale... I have donated MANY items for various charities, auctions, etc. and although I love supporting and it is a kind thing to do.... I cannot say I have ever received a sale from one.... It is a way to advertise, but I think ultimately WE would like to get a sale from one....I mean we are in business.... right?
As for opinion??? I do not see what I have written previously as opinion... I think it is more a long the lines of good advise... ;)

| I was just trying to explore some new avenues of advertising as I've never had my advertising dollars ever turn into enough sales to cover the advertising dollars spent. I've spoken with so many people about it it's dizzying. I know word of mouth is my best advertising (it's the only thing that has ever worked and it works well), but in this economy, I wanted to explore some new ideas as well. Thanks for the comments, ladies. |
